There seems to be a lot of buzz lately on how wikileaks has caused serious consternation in the international community about a variety of different things. First of all the "international community" that seems to be hyperventilating refers to none other than you or I. I, for one, am breathing quite normally thank you. Is it just me, or do I think that the public outrage is palpably excessive? Every one knows that what someone says in public is not necessarily the same as what one says behind the scenes? It's called "off the record". Everyone rattles off off the record all the time. I do as well. It's a bit embarassing that it all had to come out but why is it surprising? International leaders, we now know, think unflattering thoughts about other International leaders.Of course they do! They are paid to succesfully camouflage said thoughts in a veil of amity. This is one potent reason as to why they are referred to as "Diplomats". The reason they are given this title is that they have to be part "Acrobat", ie dodge important questions and part "Doormat", i.e patiently overlook veiled insults. If this had not been their job, they might be called "Super Mat", or even "Spider Mat".
Let's look at what has been unravelled thus far. Obama thinks Cameron is a lightweight, a Singapore minister thinks Japan is a "big fat loser", and the Gulf States want US to bomb Iran. None of these are even remotely interesting to me. Now if Dick Cheney had ordered Saddam's testicles to be cut off personally with a swiss army knife, that wouldnt be surprising but atleast it would be interesting. Recently in Singapore, there was a screening of Aparna Sen's "Japanese Wife". During the screening, the "honorable" Ambassador of Japan was present as well. His excellency, as they referred to him time and again, sat through the movie, reading the subtitles obediently and then took the pulpit at the end to say a proverbial few words. He said that no one in Japan knows yet about this movie but if it were screened in Japan it would improve the relationship between Indians and Japanese. What bollocks! This is the best he could come up with. Then they will publish a wiki leak on what actually went on in his mind and we will all be astonished! Get away Lassange..
