Asean is chockfull of tropical island resorts but I heard someone say recently that the only ones worth visiting are the ones that are not advertised in Singapore. I haven't found any such potential pulaus in the black media just yet so like a compliant rubber neck I am in the process of scouting all the familiar locales..the usual suspects are as follows:
Phuket, pattaya, koh samui ..thailand
Langkawi,kota kinabulu: malaysia
Palawan: phillipines
Bali, bintan and batam: indonesia
Of these, I have now been to bintan and langkawi. I made the same mistakes twice now in both venues so I will be wiser next time round hopefully. Generally speaking, these islands made me understand and appreciate two previous mental images I have harboured regarding such locales.
1) The computer game Myst(yes I know I'm hopelessly out of touch!)
2) The island of pulau pulau bompa in the tintin adventure Flight 714
As might be expected, herges depiction of the island was right on the money including details around old caves with infernal bats..I was half expecting to find rastapopulos in the hotel lounge puffing on his havana and going "himself, dear boy!!!" My advice, read this tintin adventure 1OO times, close your eyes, and transport yourself to langkawi. Beats the hell out of overpaying for every molecule of air that you breathe.
