"Couldn't Live Anywhere Else"

Ever hear this refrain from your fellow mates? Makes me really wonder. How it is possible for someone born and raised for the larger part of his or her life in modest surroundings, to suddenly after finding themselves in a fortuitous locale (say New York, London or San Francisco..or even Mumbai or Delhi), state that they are unfortunately unable to thrive in any other environ is beyond me.Maybe it's the small town guy in me speaking. If it is for feeling elite, then it is understandable, but even so, for every advantage offered by any space, there is bound to be others offered by other spaces. If it is for making other people miserable, it is even better as it is really working. But I cannot believe it is rooted in fact. This statement is one of the least rational I have heard, particularly from Indians whether in India or abroad.
Using the 80-20 theory, I'd say most Indians live a lifestyle that is not materially different based on their location, so it is largely portable. There may be an odd luxury here and there that the specific location offers them, but in my opinion it is best to be semi-detached to it. (I live in a semi-detached house, so you'll notice I practice what I preach). In today's globalized economy, there's no knowing what opportunity may present itself. Staying rooted to your "questionable" dreamworld may not be prudent even if, for the moment, pleasant.
